Missing in Plain Sight


Single parents are absent from the global policy agenda. The Beijing Declaration, adopted by 189 Member States to advance gender equality, barely mentions them. Yet their lives are shaped by these decisions every day. Over 100 million voices remain unheard. That must change.

What We See — and What We Don’t


UN Women estimates at least 100 million single mothers globally. But this is a conservative figure. Many remain invisible: living in extended families, affected by migration or conflict, or outside formal data systems. As one insight puts it: “By undercounting single mothers, we underserve families.”

Who Are Single Parents?


Not a single story, but a diverse reality. Divorced, widowed, never married, separated by migration or conflict — or single by choice. Different paths, shared need for recognition. Globally, 84% of single-parent households are headed by women — but fathers are part of this story too.
